Mari Takashina was nervous. Anyone would feel nervous visiting the family home of the man she intends to marry for the first time, but Mari had an additional reason for her anxiety.
Her fiancé, Takeshi Morimoto, had parents who were a bit eccentric. In fact, it was debatable whether they could even be called “parents” at all.
Following the map on her smartphone to the address she’d been given, she found herself looking up at a massive high-rise apartment complex.
Thinking about how different this was from her own cramped detached house in the suburbs — a world of difference, really — Mari stepped through the outer entrance door. Takeshi, who was waiting on the other side of a glass partition, tapped on the glass to welcome her.
He opened the inner sliding door from the other side.
“Welcome, Mari-chan. Moms are waiting for you.”
Takeshi said this with a smile. Mari peered closely at the space where he had just been standing; the floor was covered in plush carpeting, and there was a Nordic-style table with a few chairs.
“Hey, what is that place?”
Takeshi looked at the area she was pointing to and answered with a puzzled expression.
“That space? It’s a shared reception area.”
“Shared?”
“It’s for when delivery people or contractors visit. Oh, right — you live in a detached house, so you wouldn’t know about that, would you?”
“Hey… are we, like, in a ‘love across the class divide’ situation?”
“Hahaha, don’t be so dramatic. Come on, let’s go. We’re on the twentieth floor.”
The two of them got into the elevator.
Takeshi’s apartment was incredibly spacious; the living room alone seemed to be at least twenty tatami mats in size. The entire south-facing wall was made of glass, offering a view down onto the low-rise buildings Mari had just walked past. The night view would surely be stunning.
After offering Mari a pair of indoor slippers that looked expensive, Takeshi called out loudly toward the back of the apartment.
“Mom Misaki, Mom Reiko — I’ve brought Mari-chan over.”
A door at the far end of the living room opened, and two women entered. Although she had heard they were in their late fifties, both looked much younger. Mari straightened her posture and bowed deeply.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you. My name is Mari Takashina. Thank you so much for inviting me today…”
One of the women—wearing a flashy dress that looked fit for a fashion show — rushed over and suddenly embraced Mari.
“Oh, what a lovely young lady. I’m Misaki Morimoto.”
Flustered at being suddenly hugged by a woman old enough to be her mother, Mari managed only to nod her head in a polite greeting to the other woman.
In contrast to Misaki, the second woman smiled warmly; she was dressed in a blouse with a modest cut — despite its intricate detailing — and a pale green long skirt.
Takeshi said to Mari with a wry smile, “That’s Mom Reiko. These two are my mothers.”
Beaming with delight, Misaki led Mari toward the center of the living room, where a luxurious table and sofa were arranged.
“Let’s skip the stiff formalities and just relax. What would you like to drink, Mari-san? Wine? Or perhaps a cocktail?”
“O-oh, no… I’d rather not have alcohol in the middle of the day…”
Reiko rolled up a fashion magazine lying nearby and gave Misaki a sharp smack on the back of the head.
“Misaki, you’re getting too carried away! You’re making Mari uncomfortable.”
