At Mari’s words, Reiko nodded slowly, though she wore a stunned expression.

Unable to hold back any longer, Mari’s father interjected.

“Takeshi, are you really okay with that? The child being born won’t be yours own. Can you accept that?”

Takeshi closed his eyes and thought for a few seconds before answering decisively.

“If it means I can marry Mari-chan, I don’t mind. After all, I myself was born that way. I’ll be the one to undergo the sterilization procedure — a vasectomy.”

Mari’s father asked his daughter, “Mari, are you truly okay with this? Can you really raise a child that doesn’t share the blood of the man you love?”

Mari spoke to her father in a resolute tone.

“We aren’t just vessels for genes or DNA. We’re human beings. If reproductive medicine is what led us to this situation, then we’ll use that same medicine to overcome it. Family bonds shouldn’t be defined by genes.”

A few months later, clad in a wedding dress, Mari was making final preparations while her mother and Misaki looked on.

Her mother spoke up.

“Are you really sure about this? I’m so sorry for putting you through such hardship.”

Misaki also spoke, fighting back tears.

“I hope you find happiness. I’ll do whatever I can to make amends.”

Taking the hands of both teary-eyed women, Mari smiled brightly and said:

“Why are you both apologizing? I don’t consider myself unfortunate. If anything, I’m lucky. After all, I have two real mothers. There’s the mother who endured the pain of childbirth and raised me — my mother in spirit. And then there’s the mother who provided the genes that gave me life. I have double mothers … or rather … I can say my mother is squared.”
