Everyone sat in silence, unable to speak. The living room door opened, and Mari entered, carrying a stack of documents. She sat down between her parents, placed the papers on the table, and turned to face Takeshi, Misaki, and Reiko directly before speaking.

“Let me start with the conclusion.”

Takeshi, Misaki, and Reiko straightened up, feeling like prisoners awaiting a death sentence. Mari continued.

“I want to set a condition for my marriage to Takeshi.”

All three of them looked utterly shocked. Reiko asked tentatively,“Um, does that mean you aren’t calling off the wedding?”

Mari shook her head firmly.

“I considered that, too. I looked into it quite a bit. According to a lawyer, Takeshi and I can legally get married.”

Mari’s parents seemed equally blindsided; they both gasped in surprise. Her mother spoke up.

“But you two are half-siblings.”

“Genetically, yes. But on paper, Takeshi and I were born to parents with no blood relation and raised in separate households. In a legal sense, we’re total strangers.”

Takeshi asked, looking incredulous,“You mean there’s no legal issue?”

“Japan’s marriage system is based on the family register; marriage isn’t prohibited unless there’s a blood relationship recorded in the register. In fact, a case like ours is something the law never even anticipated. The law simply hasn’t kept pace with medical advances.”

Misaki asked a question, and Mari answered in a calm, composed tone.

“Are you really okay with that? What about children? If you two have a baby, wouldn’t it be the product of an incestuous union?”

“That’s where I’m setting a condition. I will marry Takeshi, and we’ll have children if we can. However, I want to conceive using donor sperm from a third party.”
