Powerless Magic: The Water Witch and the BoyWhile I was traveling, a boy ran up to me in a town.

“Please break my curse!” he cried.

His arm was covered in a terrifying black aura. His mother followed him, looking desperate. I took them to my inn to examine the boy’s arm.

However, as I looked deeper into the curse, I turned pale. I searched all my magic books for a cure, but I found nothing.

“I… I cannot fix it,” I said quietly.

The mother and the boy started to cry. I learned that the boy had received a mysterious book from a friend.

“That is the ‘Book of the Demon’!” I shouted. “Go to the church immediately! It is a miracle that he is still alive.”

I took the boy to the church on my broom and asked a priest to protect him. Then, I flew to find the other child who had the book. I exchanged ten normal books for the dangerous one and returned to the church to seal the ‘Book of the Demon’ on the holy altar.

The source of the curse was gone, but the danger was not over. Suddenly, the mother called me through a communication crystal.

“The boy has disappeared!” she cried.

I searched from the sky and found him on the roof of a tall building. He was about to jump.

“My life has no meaning anymore,” he whispered. “I have no arm. I can’t do anything.”

Before he could fall, I accelerated my broom. I jumped off and caught him in the air. We fell onto the roof together.

“I don’t know how you feel,” I told him, breathing hard. “And I’m sorry that my magic was not strong enough to save your arm. But please, let’s overcome this together. Tell me anything I can do for you.”

The boy cried in my arms. The curse was gone and his life was saved, but his lost arm never came back. That night, at the inn, I cried because I felt powerless. Even though I was a witch, I couldn’t save one boy’s arm.

The next morning, I prepared to leave the town. Suddenly, the boy and his mother called out to me.

“Witch!”

The boy smiled and waved his remaining arm energetically.

“Thank you!” he shouted.

I cried again, but this time, with a small smile. My magic was not perfect, and I couldn’t perform a miracle. However, he was trying to live strongly even with his scar. I waved back and continued my journey, carrying this pain and memory in my heart.

●全訳：無力な魔法と少年の勇気●

旅の途中、街に入った瞬間に少年に呼び止められました。「呪いを解いてくれ」という彼の腕には、禍々しい黒いオーラが宿っていました。私は彼らを宿へ連れて行き、魔法で詳しく診察しました。

しかし、調べれば調べるほど顔が青ざめました。魔導書を必死にめくり、あらゆる術式を探しましたが、その呪いを消し去る方法はどこにも記されていませんでした。

「……直せないです」

私の言葉に、親子は涙を流しました。呪いの原因は、少年が友人に譲った「悪魔の書」でした。私はすぐに彼らを教会へ避難させ、神父に少年を託しました。

私は一人で空へ飛び、本を持っていたもう一人の子を探し出しました。10冊の本と交換で「悪魔の書」を回収し、教会の祭壇に封印しました。これで呪いの根源は断たれました。

しかし、安堵したのも束の間、少年が教会を抜け出し、ビルの屋上の縁に立っていると連絡が入りました。「腕もない、もう終わりだ」と絶望する少年が身を投げようとした瞬間、私はほうきを加速させ、彼を抱きしめて屋上へと押し戻しました。

「私にはあなたの気持ちは分からないし、呪いを解くこともできなかった。でも、私にできることがあれば何でも言って。一緒に乗り越えましょう」と私は必死に伝えました。街の人々が集まり、少年を介抱しました。呪いは消え、命は助かりましたが、悪魔に喰われた彼の腕が戻ることはありませんでした。

その夜、宿で一人、私は「たった一人の腕すら救えない」と自分の無力さに涙しました。翌朝、逃げるように街を出ようとした時、後ろから少年の呼ぶ声がしました。振り返ると、少年は包帯の巻かれた短い腕を必死に、力いっぱい振っていました。

「ありがとう！」

秋の空に響くその言葉に、私は再び涙しました。私の魔法は万能ではなく、奇跡も起こせませんでした。けれど、彼は失った傷跡を抱えて生きていこうとしていたのです。私は泣き笑いの顔で手を振り返し、この痛みとともに再び旅に出ることにしました。
