The Light of Departure: A 1,000-Year PromiseWhile we were flying to the next country, I noticed that Karen’s body was beginning to glow and turn transparent.

“Karen! Your body is glowing! What’s happening?” I asked, panicking.

Karen smiled brightly and said, “It seems my time has come. Actually, I am over 1,000 years old. I’m sorry I kept it a secret, Seren.”

I was shocked. I had never told her my real name.

“How do you know my name?” I whispered.

“Your boyfriend asked me a long time ago,” she explained. “He said, ‘If she falls into despair, please help her walk forward again.’ My journey ends here, but you must keep going, Seren.”

”No! Please don’t leave me!” I reached out, but my fingers slipped through the particles of light.

Karen put her precious pendant into my hand and squeezed it gently.

“Don’t cry. I will always be near you. I had so much fun every day. Thank you, Seren!”

With those final words, Karen turned into a brilliant light and rose into the sky. The broom, which used to carry two people, became cruelly light. I screamed her name into the night forest, but there was no answer.

I opened the pendant with trembling hands. Inside, there was a photo of us laughing together.

I have lost someone precious again. I must carry this curse of immortality and live alone. However, as long as I have this warm pendant, I will hold onto the “reason to look forward” that Karen gave me.

My journey continues.

●全訳：旅立ちの光：千年の約束●

次の国へ向かって飛んでいるとき、後ろに乗っているカレンの体が光り出し、透け始めているのに気づきました。

「カレン！体が光ってるわ！どういうこと？」私はパニックになりながら尋ねました。

カレンは晴れやかに微笑んで言いました。「どうやら時間のようだ。実は、私はもう1000歳を超えていたんだ。黙っていてごめんよ、セレン」

私は衝撃を受けました。彼女に本名を教えたことは一度もなかったからです。

「どうして私の名前を知っているの？」私は囁きました。

「ずっと昔、君の彼氏に頼まれたんだ」彼女は説明しました。「『もし彼女が絶望に落ちたら、また前を向いて歩けるように助けてやってくれ』ってね。私の旅はここで終わりだけど、お前は進み続けなきゃいけないんだ、セレン」

「嫌よ！行かないで！」手を伸ばしましたが、指先は光の粒をすり抜けるだけでした。

カレンは大切にしていたペンダントを私の手に握らせ、そっと力を込めました。

「泣くなよ。私はずっとお前の近くにいる。毎日が本当に楽しかった。ありがとう、セレン！」

その言葉を最後に、カレンは眩い光となって空へと昇っていきました。二人乗りだった箒は、残酷なほど軽くなりました。私は夜の森に向かって彼女の名前を叫びましたが、返事はありませんでした。
