2.1 The Witch’s Taboo: Law and LifeI am the Water Witch. While traveling, I met my friend and we were laughing. However, the air in a dark alley was cold and heavy. There, I saw my master. She had tied up a man and a woman, and near them lay a young girl who was no longer breathing.

”Master?” I whispered, my magic leaking from my shaking fingers. My friend screamed in hatred, “How dare you kill my best friend!” She created ice knives to attack my master. I grabbed her shoulders to stop her.

“Don’t do it,” I said. “Even if you kill her, the girl will not come back.”

My master looked at her blood-stained hands and spoke quietly.

“I am sorry. This girl was being abused by her parents. I tried to stop it, but I hesitated because of the ‘Witch’s Taboo.’ I was afraid of interfering with human fate. If I had broken the law and acted sooner, I could have saved her life.”

Witches must protect the laws of the world, but those laws killed the girl. My master took off her coat and gently covered the girl’s body.

“I am going to the police,” she said. “I must be punished for failing to save a life because I was tied by the law.” Her back looked smaller than ever as she walked away.

We carried the girl to a lake outside the town. I used my magic to create a “water cradle” for her. I put the warmth of her happy memories into the water.

“Water Witch,” my friend said. “I will keep walking in this world that she loved, even though there are many things I cannot forgive yet.”

I did not tell my friend one thing. When I created the cradle, I saw the girl’s last memory. It was a faint feeling of “gratitude” toward my master who came to help her.

My master will blame herself for the rest of her life. But the girl did not die in total despair. Keeping this truth to myself was my own “law” as a student saved by my master.

I quietly left the place so that my friend could spend time with her memories. My journey continues, searching for the day when this cold water turns into warm steam.

●全訳：魔女の禁忌：法と命●

私は水の魔女。旅の途中で友人と再会し、笑い合っていました。しかし、路地裏の空気は冷たく重いものでした。そこには私の師匠がいました。彼女は男女を縛り上げ、その傍らには息をしていない少女が横たわっていました。

「師匠？」私は震える指から魔法を漏らしながら呟きました。友人は「よくも親友を！」と憎しみに満ちた声を上げ、氷のナイフを作って師匠を襲おうとしました。私は彼女の肩を掴んで止めました。

「だめよ。彼女を殺しても、あの子は戻らない」

師匠は血に染まった手を見つめ、静かに語りました。

「すまなかった。この子は両親に虐待されていた。止めようとしたが、『魔女の禁忌』を恐れて躊躇してしまった。人の運命に介入することを恐れたのだ。もし私が法を捨ててもっと早く動いていれば、彼女の命を救えたはずなのに」

魔女は世界の理（ことわり）を守る者ですが、その理が少女を殺したのです。師匠は上着を脱ぎ、そっと少女の遺体を包みました。

「私は自警団へ行く。理に縛られ命を救えなかった報いを受けねばならん」遠ざかる彼女の背中は、かつてないほど小さく見えました。

私たちは少女を街外れの湖へと運びました。私は魔法で「水のゆりかご」を作り、彼女の幸せな思い出の温もりを水に込めました。

「水の魔女」と友人が言いました。「あの子が愛したこの世界を、もう少し歩いてみるわ。まだ許せないことは多いけれど」

私は友人に一つだけ言わなかったことがあります。ゆりかごを作った際、私は少女の最後の記憶を見ました。それは、助けに来てくれた師匠への微かな「感謝」でした。

師匠は一生自分を責め続けるでしょう。でも、少女は絶望だけで死んだのではありませんでした。この真実を胸に秘めておくことが、師匠に救われた弟子である私の「理」でした。
