The Phantom Village: The Water Witch and CarenAfter passing through a humid jungle, I arrived at a small village. The villagers welcomed me with gentle smiles. I felt a strange, peaceful atmosphere there.
The village chief took me to the central square. To my surprise, there was a stone statue of my old friend, Caren. However, the statue looked much older than the Caren I knew.
“Do you know this witch?” the chief asked.
“Yes, she is my precious friend,” I replied.
“That is wonderful! Could you please call her here?”
I called Caren through my crystal ball. Caren looked like a young, naughty girl, as usual. But when I told her about the village, she looked frozen for a moment.
“I’ll be there soon!” she shouted and hung up.
A few hours later, Caren arrived on her broom with a loud crash. Mud splashed onto my robe. I used my water magic to clean it. Caren whispered something to the chief, and he nodded deeply.
“Everyone! Lady Caren has returned! Tonight, we have a feast!”
The village was full of energy that night. People danced around a campfire. However, it felt strange. I couldn’t feel the heat of the fire, and the music sounded like it was coming from a distant memory.
The chief said to me, “Long ago, this village suffered from a terrible heatwave. Caren saved us, but we were too weak to thank her. We have always regretted that.”
I looked at Caren. Her eyes were not those of a young girl; they looked like they had seen hundreds of years pass by.
The next morning, I woke up because of the hot sunlight. But I wasn’t in a bed. There was no inn, no statue, and no village. There were only tall summer grass and old graves.
Caren was kneeling on the ground, crying quietly.
“I’m so glad… they could finally find peace,” she whispered.
I actually knew the truth. Caren had become a hero of this village many decades ago. As the Water Witch, I could feel the “weight of time” in her tears.
”Caren, what happened?” I asked.
She quickly wiped her face and put on her mask of a “naughty girl” again.
“Nothing! Well, I’m going home now! See you, Water Witch!”
She flew away quickly. I waved my hand and said, “Take care.”
She continues to act like a young friend because she doesn’t want me to feel sad about her being an “ancient witch.” If so, I will continue to be deceived by her kindness.
I started walking toward the next town. I wanted to find a very cheerful story to tell her when we meet again.

湿ったジャングルを抜けると、小さな村が現れました。村人たちは穏やかな笑顔で迎えてくれましたが、どこかこの世のものとは思えない不思議な温かさを感じました。

水晶を通して呼び出したカレンは、いつも通りの生意気な小娘の姿でした。しかし、村の話をした瞬間、彼女が凍りついたのを私は見逃しませんでした。
数時間後、カレンは猛烈な勢いでほうきで突っ込んできました。着地の衝撃で私のローブが汚れましたが、私は水でそれを洗い流しました。カレンは落ち着かない様子で村長と何かをささやき合い、その夜、村では盛大な宴が始まりました。
宴は活気に満ちていましたが、不思議なことにキャンプファイヤーの熱を肌に感じず、音楽も遠い記憶のように響いていました。
村長は言いました。「昔、この村が猛暑に襲われたとき、カレン様が救ってくれた。お礼を言う力も残っていなかった我らの、それがずっと心残りだったんじゃ」

「何があったの？」とあえて尋ねると、彼女は慌てて小娘の仮面を被り直しました。
「なんでもない！ じゃあ帰るね！」
逃げるように去っていく彼女に、私は手を振りました。彼女は私が悲しまないよう、自分が「年老いた大魔女」であることを隠しているのです。ならば、私はその優しさに騙され続けよう。
私は次の街へ歩き出しました。彼女に聞かせるための、とびきり明るいお土産話を探すために。
