The Silver Locket: The Limit of MagicWe were traveling across many places. After crossing the desert mountains, we arrived at a lively village by the sea. However, the peace was suddenly broken by a pirate attack.

We immediately started evacuating the villagers to a safe, temporary space. While I focused on the magic of transportation, Karen fought the pirates. She was very careful to make them sleep rather than hurt them, because a witch’s power is strong enough to destroy a human completely.

After the fight, we realized a mother was missing. We went to a pirate ship and found the prisoners. Suddenly, a pirate tried to attack Karen from behind. Surprisingly, the mother protected Karen and was stabbed instead.

“Thank you for saving my child,” she whispered, smiling weakly. “I didn’t want your beautiful hands to be stained with a killer’s blood.” Those were her final words.

We returned her body to her daughter. Karen used her magic to repair the broken streets and houses.

“Look, I can fix these so easily,” Karen said with a dry laugh. “But I cannot close the hole in her heart with my magic.”

Finally, Karen polished the silver locket. It was shiny, but a single drop of blood remained on the photo inside. It was the proof of the mother’s love that Karen couldn’t erase. Karen returned it to the girl and apologized.

The girl hugged the locket and said, “It’s okay. It smells like my mother. Thank you, Witch.”

As the sun rose, we realized that there are lives we cannot save even with powerful magic. But we must keep walking to protect the warmth left in our hands.

●全訳：銀のロケット：魔法の限界●

私達は各地を旅していました。砂漠の山を越えると、海辺の活気ある村に到着しました。しかし、海賊の襲撃によって平穏は突然破られました。

私達はすぐに住民を安全な一時的空間へ避難させ始めました。私が転送の魔法に集中する間、カレンは海賊と戦いました。彼女は海賊を傷つけるのではなく眠らせるよう細心の注意を払いました。魔女の力は人間を完全に破壊してしまうほど強力だからです。

戦いの後、一人の母親が行方不明であることに気づきました。私達は海賊船へ向かい、囚人たちを見つけました。突然、海賊が背後からカレンを襲おうとしました。驚いたことに、母親がカレンを庇い、代わりに刺されてしまったのです。

「あの子を助けてくれてありがとう」と彼女は弱々しく微笑みながら囁きました。「あなたの綺麗な手を、人殺しの血で汚してほしくなかったの……」それが彼女の最期の言葉となりました。

私達は彼女の亡骸を娘のもとへ届けました。カレンは魔法を使って、壊れた道や家を修理しました。

「見てよ、こんなに簡単に直せるんだぜ」カレンは乾いた声で笑いました。「なのに、あの人の心臓の穴一つ、魔法じゃ塞げないんだ」

最後に、カレンは銀のロケットを磨き上げました。それは輝いていましたが、中にある写真には一滴の血痕が残っていました。それはカレンがどうしても消せなかった、母親の愛の証でした。カレンはそれを少女に返し、謝りました。

少女はロケットを抱きしめ、「いいの。お母さんの匂いがするから。ありがとう、魔女さん」と言いました。

朝日が昇る中、私達は強力な魔法を持っていても救えない命があることを悟りました。それでも、私達はこの手の中に残された温もりを守るために歩き続けなければなりません。
