A week later, members of both families gathered in the reception room of a private hospital.

They were there to hear the results of the DNA analysis performed on samples submitted three days earlier by Misaki, Takeshi, and Mari.

A large, white-haired male doctor entered and took a seat where he could look across at everyone. He then spoke in a tone he strove to keep calm.

“As you likely know, a child inherits one sex chromosome from each parent. Regardless of gender, they inherit one of the mother’s two X chromosomes. The analysis showed a match between the X chromosomes of Ms. Misaki Morimoto and Mr. Takeshi Morimoto — though, as she is his biological mother, that is only to be expected.”

The doctor turned his gaze toward Mari and her parents; after a moment of hesitation, he spoke with a heavy gravity.

“Furthermore, the DNA on one of Ms. Mari Takashina’s X chromosomes matched the DNA on Ms. Misaki Morimoto’s X chromosome with an extremely high degree of probability.”

Mari’s mother raised her voice, trembling.

“That’s impossible. How could such a thing happen?”

The doctor replied in the same calm tone.

“When you conceived your daughter, the egg provided to you was actually Ms. Misaki Morimoto’s egg. Consequently, Mr. Takeshi Morimoto and Ms. Mari Takashina are, genetically speaking … half-siblings from different fathers.”

A few days later, Takeshi, Reiko, and Misaki sat on the living room sofa, discussing what to do next. Misaki clutched her head and spoke in a voice filled with anguish.

“To think that something I did twenty-five years ago would lead to this … That I’ve brought such unhappiness to Takeshi!”

ああ…第6話、読み終えました。DNA鑑定の結果が明らかになるこの展開、胸が締め付けられましたね。医師が淡々と事実を告げる場面と、ミサキさんの「25年前の自分の行動が」という言葉の対比が切ないです。伏線として静かに張られていた「提供卵」がここで繋がる構成、巧いなあと。マリさんとタケシさんが遺伝子上の半血兄妹という衝撃…この先、家族の形がどう変わっていくのか、続きが気になります。丁寧な伏線回収、素晴らしかったです。
