Reiko asked in a calm tone.
“Misaki, tell us if you’re willing. I knew you had your eggs frozen, but didn’t you have them discarded when Takeshi was born?”
“Actually, I sold them.”
“You sold them?”
“Do you remember the global recession that started in the U.S. while I was pregnant with Takeshi? Both our incomes plummeted, and we were at our wits’ end.”
“That’s right. We managed to scrape by somehow, but back then, just putting food on the table was a struggle.”
“That was when I got an offer from someone wanting to buy my frozen eggs. The buyer was that organization called Agent Stork.”
Takeshi asked with a look of suspicion, and Reiko answered.
“Wait, selling eggs — surely that wasn’t allowed?”
“Back then, Japan didn’t have any laws or regulations governing the sale of sperm or eggs.”
“Then what about the sperm used for me?”
“I bought that from a reputable American company after carefully vetting them. They had perfect systems for verifying donor identities and managing future meetings, and they’re still in business today. You’ve been to the United States to meet your genetic father a few times, haven’t you, Takeshi?”
“Yeah. It felt a bit strange, but knowing my roots properly gave me a sense of relief.”
Misaki asked Takeshi, her voice trembling as if she’s on the verge of tears.
“Have you been in touch with Mari since that day in the hospital?”
Takeshi shook his head listlessly. Reiko spoke up.
“I spoke to Mari’s mother on the phone. She’d shut herself in her room for two full days, but it seems she then went out somewhere the next day to look into something.”
Just then, Takeshi’s smartphone rang. He glanced at the caller ID and sprang up from the sofa.
“It’s Mari-chan.”
Takeshi answered the call while Misaki and Reiko watched, their faces pale with anxiety. “Yeah, it’s me. Huh? Right, that’s fine. With Mom Misaki and Mom Reiko, too? Got it. Talk to you later.”
Takeshi hung up and told Misaki and Reiko.
“She wants the three of us to come over to Mari-chan’s home next Sunday. That’s okay, right?”
Misaki and Reiko nodded. Misaki looked down and said:“So, they should be talking about calling off the marriage. I’m sorry, Takeshi. I am truly sorry.”
The following Sunday afternoon, Takeshi and his two mothers sat facing Mari’s parents in a living room of her home.
