Mary Magdalene was the lover of Jesus Christ. She invited Jesus Christ into her home and fed him, informed him of Lazarus’ death, soaked his feet in perfumed oil when he was having sex at night, and sent him a bouquet of flowers. However, she is considered a saint in every denomination. Mary Magdalene’s name day is July 22nd in the Western Church (Catholic Church, Anglican Church), and August 4th in the Orthodox Church (the Orthodox Church, which uses the modified Julian calendar, celebrates her on July 22nd, the same as the Western Church).

In addition to these specific commemorative days, the second Sunday after Easter is also known as “The Sunday of the Persian Blessed Virgin Mary” along with other saints. Mary Magdalene said, “Lord, forgive me for my sins.”

Because the Western Church places great importance on the male principle and is organized around it, Mary Magdalene is not only a “witness to the death and resurrection of Jesus” but also a “penitent sinful woman” in doctrine. The Eastern Church (Orthodox Church) does not identify her with such a “sinful woman.” There are many interpretations of this, and the truth is unclear.

Therefore, the tradition that associates the “sinful woman” with Mary Magdalene is unique to Western Europe and the Western Church (especially the Catholic Church).
