The Rain of Memories: The Water Witch and ErikaI am the Water Witch. I travel across mountains and valleys. One day, I entered a thicket and noticed that the trees were starting to die. Suddenly, someone called out to me.
”Hey, are you a witch?”
I looked up and saw a girl about my age. She was looking at me from a house built on a large tree.
”Yes, I am,” I replied.
”Could you please help me?” she asked. “As you can see, the plants here are dying. I am protecting the new buds with my magic, but I cannot use water magic. You are a Water Witch, aren’t you?”
”How did you know that?” I asked.
”A friend who helped me before told me, ‘A more suitable person will pass by soon.’ Then, I happened to see you.”
It seemed a friend of mine had been here before. I am indeed good at water magic.
”I see. But who are you?”
”Sorry, I’m Erika, the Herb Witch. Please, make it rain on this land.”
”All right,” I said. “However, magic that changes the weather consumes a lot of magical energy. Also, I need some specific herbs.”
”I understand. Tell me whatever you need. Come inside for now,” she said.
I entered her treehouse. Inside, there were very few signs of daily life. Erika spread a map on the table.
”I want it to rain over this area,” she said.
”I understand. I need these herbs. Also, please lend me some of your magical power.”
The herbs she provided were high quality. We went outside under the burning sun. First, I put the herbs and water into a pot and mixed them carefully.
”Erika, please put your hand on mine,” I said.
As I began to chant, a blue magic circle appeared under our feet. The water in the pot rose into the sky like sparkling bubbles. Soon, a beautiful rain began to fall from the clear sky.
”The rain I’ve been waiting for!” Erika cried happily.
As the magic rain fell, the dying flowers and trees quickly regained their energy. Then, Erika looked at the forest and spoke quietly.
”This grave belongs to my lover. He loved this forest. We often went to the flower field over there. But he died of a sudden illness. Even my herbs could not save him… Thank you. Thanks to you, I could protect the forest of our memories.”
As she spoke, Erika’s body was wrapped in a warm light and became transparent.
”I hope you can meet him again,” I said softly.
”Yes…” That was her last word. She rose into the sky with the light.
Suddenly, the treehouse disappeared as if it had never been there. I wiped my tears and built a grave for Erika. I offered flowers from the field she had mentioned and prayed. I prayed that the two of them could meet again.
I will never forget Erika’s bright smile. When our magic mixed and rose into the sky, I believe her soul became free.
My journey continues, but every time it rains, I will remember her gentle voice.

「なぜそれを？」と私は尋ねました。
「前に私を助けてくれた友達が、『すぐにもっと適任な人が通りかかるよ』って言っていたの。それで、偶然あなたを見かけたのよ」
どうやら、私の知人が先にここへ来ていたようです。確かに、私は水の魔法を得意としています。
「なるほど。でも、あなたはどなた？」
「ごめんね、私は香草の魔女のエリカ。お願い、この地に雨を降らせてほしいの」

「ええ……」それが彼女の最後の言葉でした。彼女は光とともに空へと昇っていきました。
突然、ツリーハウスは最初からそこになかったかのように消えてしまいました。私は涙を拭い、エリカのためにお墓を建てました。彼女が言っていた花畑の花を供え、祈りました。二人がまた会えるようにと。
私はエリカの明るい笑顔を一生忘れません。私たちの魔法が混ざり合い空へ昇ったとき、彼女の魂は自由になれたのだと信じています。
私の旅は続きますが、雨が降るたびに、彼女の優しい声を思い出すでしょう。
