The following Sunday, Misaki, Reiko, and Takeshi visited Mari’s home together. Even though it was his day off, Mari’s father was dressed in a suit, and her mother, too, looked formal in her best outfit — though it was clearly inexpensive.
Reiko, dressed elegantly as always, and Misaki, wearing a brightly colored dress, sat on chairs brought from the dining-kitchen area into the cramped living room and exchanged greetings.
Takeshi, who had visited the house several times before, also looked unusually stiff in his suit. Mari, wearing her favorite dress, set out tea and snacks.
After a while, Mari’s mother spoke up suddenly, looking deeply serious.
“Actually, there is something we need to tell you all. Mari, please listen too — this is something I’ve never told you before.”
Gazing at Mari —who had sat down next to Takeshi in surprise — her mother began to speak.
“Mari is indeed our daughter — the child I carried and gave birth to. However, her life began through the donation of an egg from another woman.”
The sound of Mari’s sharp intake of breath whistled through the room like a steam whistle. Her mother continued.
“After we married, I discovered I had a congenital condition — blocked fallopian tubes. It didn’t affect my daily life at all, but because my eggs couldn’t be released normally, I was unable to conceive. So, we conceived her using a donor egg.”
Reiko immediately spoke up with a pleasant smile.
“That would have been about twenty-five years ago, wouldn’t it? Yes, people were already talking about that sort of thing back then. It’s nothing to worry about at all. Takeshi, does what she just said bother you?”
“Not at all!” Takeshi replied with a smile. “The person I’m marrying is Mari-chan — not her mother or that egg. There’s no way I’d let something like that bother me.”
Beside him, Mari had her face covered with both hands. She had been shocked, certainly, but she seemed relieved by the words from Takeshi and the others.
Misaki also spoke in a tone that suggested it was of no concern to her.
“Oh, that’s actually quite common these days. Did the egg come from the United States?”
Mari’s mother looked up into the air, recalling the details as she answered.
“No, it was domestic. It’s gone now, but it came from a fertility treatment organization called Agent Stork.”
Clatter. It was the sound of Misaki dropping her teacup.
“I’m so sorry. I’ve just remembered something urgent I have to attend to, so I’ll be taking my leave now.”
Misaki stood up, her face deathly pale, and hurried toward the entryway. Reiko and Takeshi rushed after her, but by the time they reached the door, she had already run off outside.
Reiko apologized to Mari and her parents for the rudeness and said she would head home for the time being.
She said to Takeshi: “Takeshi, please stay by Mari’s side. What on earth has gotten into Misaki?”
