The Nameless Witch and Elda: A Promise for the FutureLast night, I saved a witch from despair. To be more precise, I saved myself from becoming a “monster” who would have had to judge her.

In the pitch-black night, I saw a terrifying red fire in the sky. I rushed to the village on my broom and saw a scene like hell. A young girl was sitting in front of a burning house.

“Burn her!” the villagers shouted with eyes full of hatred.

I saw black magic flowing from her fingers. It was a sign that her deep sadness had turned into uncontrollable hatred. If she were consumed by that darkness, she would lose her heart and become a “revenger.” If that happened, I would have no choice but to take her life to stop her.

I could not let that happen. I dove down and hugged her tightly from behind.

“Let me go! I’ll kill them all!” she screamed.

I ignored her and flew into the sky. At that moment, a stone thrown by a villager cut my cheek, and blood began to flow.

We landed in a quiet forest. She collapsed and cried out, “Why did you save me? I should have died with my family!” Her voice was so painful that birds flew away in fear.

I waited for her to stop crying. Then, I sat next to her and told her a little about my past—how I lost someone precious and how I was treated badly because I was a witch.

However, I could not tell her my name because I have no “name.” My teacher told me, “A name is something given to you by someone who will truly be on your side.” I still believe those words. So, as a “nameless witch,” I just held her small shoulders.

Finally, she told me her name: “Elda, the Night-Tilling Witch.” She had been tilling the soil at night to make the village rich. Her name was proof of how much she loved that place.

As the sun began to rise, I saw a small light of determination in her eyes. I took her to the neighboring country and used my magic to build a small house and a water channel for her.

“Thank you,” Elda said. “I will live here. Someday, I will grow better vegetables than that village ever saw.”

Looking down from my broom, I saw Elda touching the soil again. She looked very brave in the morning sun. The wound on my cheek still hurt a little, but it was proof that I protected a girl’s future.

I will continue my nameless journey until I meet someone who will finally call my real name. I accelerated my broom toward the morning light.

昨日の夜、私は一人の魔女を絶望の淵から救いました。正確には、私自身が彼女を裁かなければならない「怪物」にならずに済んだのです。

月も出ない夜、空に恐ろしいほど真っ赤な炎が見えました。嫌な予感がして村へ急ぐと、そこは地獄のような景色でした。燃える家の前で、一人の少女がへたり込んでいました。村人たちは松明を掲げ、憎しみに満ちた目で「死神め！」と叫んでいました。

私は、彼女の指先から真っ黒な魔法が溢れ出しているのを見ました。それは、深すぎる悲しみが「憎しみ」に変わった合図でした。もし彼女がその闇に飲み込まれれば、心を失った復讐者になってしまいます。そうなれば、同じ魔女である私も、彼女を止めるために命を奪うしかなくなってしまいます。

そんな悲しい結末は見たくありませんでした。私は急降下して彼女を抱きしめ、空へ逃げました。村人が投げた石が私の頬を切り裂き、血が流れました。

静かな森に降りると、彼女は泣き叫びました。「どうして助けたの！家族と一緒に死ねばよかったのに！」

私は彼女が泣き疲れるのを待ち、自分の過去を少しだけ話しました。大切な人を奪われたこと、魔女だからと酷い扱いを受けたこと。

しかし、私は名前を教えられませんでした。私には「名前」がないからです。師匠は言いました。「名前は、いつかあなたの味方をしてくれる人がつけてくれるものですよ」と。私は今もその言葉を信じています。だから私は「名もなき水の魔女」として、彼女の肩を抱きました。

彼女はやっと自分の名前を教えてくれました。「夜耕（やこう）の魔女、エルダ」。夜通し土を耕し村を豊かにしてきたその名前は、彼女がいかにその場所を愛していたかの証でした。

夜明け頃、エルダの瞳に「生きてみよう」という決意の火が灯りました。私は彼女を隣の国へ送り、小さな家と水路を作ってあげました。「ここで生きてみる。あの村より立派な野菜を作ってみせるわ」と彼女は言いました。
