The Gear Country: The Pocket Watch and the Father’s HeartI arrived at the “Country of Gears,” where the air smelled of steam and oil. I knocked on the door of the Steel Witch’s watch shop.

“Welcome,” the Steel Witch said, looking at my old pocket watch. “It has been broken for hundreds of years. What happened?”

With trembling fingers, I touched a deep dent on the watch.

“When I was a young, inexperienced witch, my magic went out of control,” I explained. “My father, who was a human, protected me and sacrificed his life. This watch was in his chest pocket at that time. He died with a smile, but I couldn’t even say ‘thank you’ or ‘I’m sorry’.”

The weight of his sacrifice had been crushing me for centuries. The Steel Witch began to repair the watch quietly.

“Listen,” she said. “This watch is not for regretting the past. It is for ticking your future, which your father wanted to protect. Open it at your inn.”

That night, at the inn, I opened the silver cover under the moonlight. Suddenly, a soft “white mist” filled the room. Inside the mist, I saw the scene from that day. However, there was no pain or fear—only a peaceful atmosphere.

”Father…” I whispered.

My father was standing there, looking at me with love. I finally found the words that had been frozen in my heart for so long.

“Father, I am sorry. And thank you so much for protecting me.”

At that moment, a peaceful smile appeared on his face. He seemed to say, “I know.” Then, his figure disappeared like morning mist melting into the sunlight.

The room became quiet again. I looked at the watch and heard the sound of the new gears.

Tick-tock, tick-tock.

The rhythm sounded like my father’s heartbeat. It felt like the warmth of his chest when he hugged me that day.

This watch is no longer just a memento of the dead. It has changed into a precious guide to walk with me toward my “tomorrow”—the life my father saved.

その夜、宿で時計を開けると、銀の蓋から柔らかな白い霧が溢れ出しました。霧の中に現れた父は、あの日と同じように私をかばうように立っていましたが、その瞳は愛に満ちていました。私はようやく、凍りついていた言葉を口にすることができました。

「お父さん、ごめんなさい。そして、守ってくれてありがとう」

父は穏やかに微笑み、「分かっているよ」と答えたように見えました。父の姿は朝霧のように消えていきましたが、静まり返った部屋には、新しく組み込まれた歯車の音が規則正しく響いていました。

そのリズムは、あの日私を抱きしめた父の鼓動のようでした。この時計はもう、ただの形見ではありません。父が命を懸けて繋いでくれた「明日」を共に歩み、命の鼓動を刻み続けるための、かけがえのない道標へと変わったのです。
