The Life of Martha, Sister of Magdalene

Martha (Martha of Bethany) or Marfa is a woman who appears in the New Testament and is a Christian saint.

Also known as Marfa,

She once lived in Bethany and was close to Jesus Christ along with her brother Lazarus and sister Mary.

The difference in the attitudes of Martha and Mary when they welcomed Jesus Christ into their home has traditionally been thought to represent a “contemplative life” and an “active life.”

The events surrounding Martha’s death are not recorded in the New Testament, but she preached in Provence from around the Middle Ages.

The New Testament does not record the events surrounding her death, but there is a legend that she was a missionary in Provence from the Middle Ages. Her relics were discovered in Tarascon in 1187.

Martha said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But whatever you ask of God, He will give it to you.”
