The Volcano’s Fury: The Water Witch and AiraI am the Water Witch. Today, I was very excited because I was going to see my best friend, Aira, the Ice and Snow Witch. After arriving in her town, I went straight to her house. We enjoyed talking about our old memories.

However, a few days later, a terrible thing happened. The ground began to shake, and Aira looked out the window with a serious face.

“The volcano might erupt,” she said. “Please help me stop it!”

We rushed toward the mountain. The town was filled with smoke and fire. We saw a child crying because his mother was trapped under a collapsed building. Pyroclastic flows (火砕流) were approaching.

I looked at Aira. She nodded with determined eyes. She seemed to say, “Go and save them.”

If I went to help the family, Aira would have to face the eruption alone. It could be our last goodbye. Even though I knew the danger, I turned my broom toward the family to honor Aira’s wish.

”I’ll save you!” I shouted.

The moment I rescued them, the volcano erupted with a huge sound. I used my water barrier to protect the family and escaped to another island.

After the eruption stopped, I returned to the island. Everything had changed.

“Aira! Where are you?” I cried.

I searched through the ash and found the site of her house. There was a small, white box. Inside, I found a photograph of Aira and me laughing together. She had protected our memory with her magic. I sat there and cried.

Suddenly, it started to snow. A soft white light appeared, and Aira was standing there. Her body was glowing with the magic of snow. I hugged her tightly.

The people held a small feast to celebrate our reunion and Aira’s bravery. We talked and laughed until morning.

The next morning, I prepared to leave.

“Are you leaving already?” Aira asked.

“Yes,” I replied. “I want to see more of the world you protected.”

I started walking again, believing that we would meet again where the snow falls.

We did not know yet that an even greater despair was waiting for us.

● 全訳：火山の怒りと氷雪の友情●

私は水の魔女。今日は親友である氷雪の魔女、アイラに会えるので、とてもワクワクしていました。街に着くとすぐに彼女の家へ向かい、私たちは思い出話に花を咲かせました。

しかし数日後、恐ろしいことが起きました。地響きと共に地面が揺れ、アイラは真剣な表情で窓の外を見つめました。

「噴火するかもしれない。止めるのを手伝って！」と彼女は言いました。

私たちは山へ急ぎました。街は煙と火の粉で溢れていました。崩れた建物の下で母親が下敷きになり、子供が泣いているのを見つけました。火砕流が迫っており、一刻の猶予もありません。

私はアイラを見ました。彼女は決意に満ちた目で頷きました。「行って、あの子たちを助けて」と彼女が言っているようでした。
