Nightmare on the Atlantic: The TitanicI woke up on a simple iron bed wearing a suit. I went to the bridge and took the wheel. The air was freezing, and the sea was as calm as a mirror. Suddenly, a lookout shouted, “Iceberg, right ahead!”

Officer Murdoch ordered, “Hard-a-starboard!” I turned the wheel as hard as I could, but the ship struck the iceberg. Water began to flood the boiler rooms. Mr. Andrews, the designer, said calmly, “The ship will sink. It is a mathematical certainty.”

Captain Smith ordered us to put women and children into the lifeboats first. I helped the passengers and got on a boat. From the dark sea, I watched the Titanic sink into the cold water. Later, Officer Lowe decided to go back to search for survivors. “You were brave, sir,” I whispered to him on the rescue ship, Carpathia. I will never forget that terrible night.
