The Fog of Reminiscence: Living WarmthOn our way to the next country, a thick, pale fog swallowed us. The air became so cold that it felt like it was freezing my lungs.
“Hold my hand,” Karen said, her voice serious. “If we get lost here, it’s over.”
Through the white fog, I saw a man. It was Mion, my lover who had died long ago to save me. He was smiling gently and waving his hand.
“Mion…? Is it really you?” I whispered.
The memories of our happy days in the forest rushed back, filling my heart with both love and pain. I tried to run toward him, but Karen held my hand tightly.
”Don’t go! He isn’t real!” Karen shouted.
But I couldn’t hear her. I wanted to reach the man I loved. As I tried to shake off Karen’s hand, she suddenly embraced me as if she were protecting something fragile.
“Don’t go,” Karen whispered into my ear. “I am here. I am standing alive right next to you.”
At that moment, the figure of Mion twisted and turned into dark mud. It was an illusion created by the fog, reflecting the “unhealed regret” in my heart. The fog disappeared, and I cried in Karen’s arms until my tears ran dry.
I am a witch who is cursed to live for hundreds of years, carrying the weight of the deaths of those I love. I cannot even choose to die. However, the warmth of Karen’s hand connects me to the “present.”
