The King’s Servant: Eternal Silence in AbydosI woke up on a wooden bed with animal-shaped legs. “Where am I now?” I wondered. I found a piece of wood on the floor. It said, “This is Abydos. You are a servant for the King.” I purified my hands and mouth with natron and prepared the King’s items.

A few days later, the King fell ill and died. “I will be the King even in the afterlife,” he had said. Soon, I found many small graves being built around the King’s tomb. I was shocked to see my own name carved on one of them.

I tried to escape, but nobody was surprised, and I was captured. When I woke up again, I was inside a coffin. I tried to knock on the lid, but I had no strength. Outside, I heard the sound of prayers. They were celebrating the King’s journey to the next world. I closed my eyes in the dark.

私は動物の形をした足の木製ベッドで目が覚めました。「今度はどこなの？」私は疑問に思いました。床に木片を見つけました。そこには「ここはアビドス。お前は王に仕える侍従だ」と書かれていました。私はナトロンで手と口を清め、王の身支度の道具を準備しました。

数日後、王は病に倒れ、亡くなりました。「私は来世でも王だ」と彼は言っていました。まもなく、王の墓の周囲に多くの小さな墓が作られているのを見つけました。その中の一つに自分の名前が刻まれているのを見て、私は衝撃を受けました。

私は逃げようとしましたが、誰も驚かず、私は捕らえられました。次に目が覚めたとき、私は棺の中にいました。蓋を叩こうとしましたが、力が入りませんでした。外では祈りの声が聞こえていました。それは王の来世への旅路を祝うものでした。私は暗闇の中で目を閉じました。
