The Great Earthquake: A Narrow Escape from the PastWe were traveling through time again. A strong wind was blowing against our faces. The guide announced, “This is Japan, September 1, 1923.” Kurona looked worried and said, “Something is wrong. This is the area where the Great Kanto Earthquake will happen!”
Suddenly, the ground shook violently. Buildings collapsed, and fire spread everywhere. It looked like hell. A woman’s voice called out, “Come this way! There is water!” but Kurona shouted, “No! Don’t go there! Many women died in that pond!”
”Follow me!” Kurona cried. I followed her closely to protect her from the flames. Finally, we reached a place where we could use the time machine. Just as a building was falling, I hugged Kurona and jumped into the machine.
When I woke up, I was in a modern hospital. “Mother!” Kurona cried. “Please don’t die.”
“I’m okay, Kurona,” I said. As a witch, my body heals instantly, and I never die. However, I must continue to save people for a thousand years. This is my cruel destiny.
If I were a normal human, I could understand Kurona’s feelings better. But as a witch, that is impossible. I felt a heavy weight in my heart. Then, Kurona whispered, “It’s okay, Mother. I will always be on your side.” Her words saved me once again.
●全訳：大震災：過去からの九死に一生●
私達は再び時を旅していました。強い風が顔に吹き付けていました。案内人が「1923年9月1日、日本です」と告げました。クロナは不安そうな顔で言いました。「何かがおかしいよ。ここは関東大震災が起こる場所だもの！」
突然、大地が激しく揺れました。建物は倒壊し、火の手がいたるところに広がりました。それは地獄のようでした。ある女性の声が「こっちへ来て！水があるわ！」と呼びかけましたが、クロナは叫びました。「ダメ！そっちへ行っちゃダメ！あの池でたくさんの女性が亡くなったんだから！」
「私についてきて！」クロナが叫びました。私は炎から彼女を守るために、ぴったりと後ろをついていきました。ついに、タイムマシーンを使える場所にたどり着きました。建物が崩れ落ちる瞬間、私はクロナを抱きしめて機械の中に飛び込みました。
目が覚めると、私は現代の病院にいました。「お母さん！」クロナが泣いていました。「死んじゃ嫌だよ」
「大丈夫よ、クロナ」私は言いました。魔女である私の体は瞬時に治癒し、決して死ぬことはありません。しかし、私は1000年の間、人々を救い続けなければなりません。これが私の残酷な宿命なのです。
もし私が普通の人間だったら、もっとクロナの気持ちを理解してあげられたでしょう。でも魔女である以上、それは不可能です。私は胸が締め付けられる思いでした。するとクロナが囁きました。「大丈夫だよ、お母さん。私はいつもお母さんの味方だよ」彼女の言葉に、私はまたしても救われました。
