A Few Centimeters: The Tragedy in the FlamesI was shopping for cosmetics when the fire alarm suddenly went off. “It’s a fire! Run!” people screamed, and everyone rushed toward the exit. I tried to lead them to safety.

The flames were approaching fast. I heard people screaming and smelled the smoke. Then, I saw a woman trapped under falling debris. “It’s no use,” she whispered.

“No!” I cried out and tried to pull her out.

At that moment, Aira appeared and held me. “Seren, we must leave now,” she said calmly.

“But Aira, there’s someone under here! Help me!” I begged. However, the building was collapsing, and the fire was everywhere. Aira just hugged me tightly until I calmed down, and we fought our way through the sea of fire to the outside.

Once we were safe, I collapsed on the ground. I felt a sharp pain in my heart because I couldn’t save the person who was right in front of me.

“Are you okay?” Aira asked.

“Yes, I’m fine,” I replied, but tears began to flow down my cheeks. The warmth of the person’s hand, which was just a few centimeters away, was gone forever.

Aira hugged me again. “It’s okay. I’m here with you,” she whispered.

Even though there are lives I cannot save, I survived today. For the sake of the person I lost, I must keep moving forward without fear.

●全訳：数センチの距離：炎の中の悲劇●

化粧品を選んでいた時、突然火災報知器が鳴り響きました。「火事よ！逃げて！」と人々が叫び、全員が出口へと走り出しました。私は人々を安全な場所へ誘導しようとしました。

炎が猛烈な勢いで迫ってきました。人々の悲鳴が聞こえ、煙の匂いが立ち込めます。その時、崩れてきた瓦礫の下に閉じ込められた女性を見つけました。「もうだめよ」と彼女は囁きました。

「だめよ！」私は叫び、彼女を引っ張り出そうとしました。

その時、アイラが現れて私を抱き止めました。「セレン、今すぐ逃げなきゃ」と彼女は冷静に言いました。

「でもアイラ、ここに人がいるの！手伝って！」私は懇願しました。しかし、建物は崩壊し、辺りは火の海でした。アイラは私が落ち着くまで強く抱きしめ、私達は炎の中を突き進んで外へ出ました。

安全な場所に出ると、私は地面に座り込んでしまいました。目の前にいた人を救えなかったことに、胸が張り裂けそうでした。

「大丈夫？」アイラが尋ねました。

「ええ、大丈夫よ」と答えましたが、涙が頬を伝いました。ほんの数センチ先にあったはずの手の温もりは、永遠に消えてしまいました。

アイラが再び私を抱きしめてくれました。「大丈夫よ。私がついているから」と彼女は囁きました。
